Sugarella's Caninese Olive Trees

Sugarella grows olive trees of the Caninese variety, one of the most representative and prized of the Lazio region, yielding an extra-virgin olive oil with a unique profile. Robust and long-lived, these trees are perfectly suited to the hilly soils of Canino, rich in minerals and with a favourable microclimate.

Alongside livestock and olive groves, the Sugarella estate grows cereals — maize, wheat and barley — and orchards that express the fertility of the Tuscia. An integrated farming operation, carried out with sustainable techniques and respect for the natural cycles of the land.

Sugarella, a commandery of the Knights

The land of Sugarella, in Canino in the heart of the Tuscia, holds a history spanning centuries: it is part of the agricultural heritage of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, the ancient order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Recognition of the Order

With the bull Piae Postulationis, Pope Paschal II officially recognises the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, placing it under the protection of the Church. Ever since, the eight-pointed cross has been its emblem.

From hospital to military order

The institution born to serve pilgrims and the sick also becomes a military order, devoted to the care of the weak and the defence of the faith.

The commanderies

Farming at the heart of charity

Across Europe the Order organises its estates into commanderies — agricultural holdings entrusted to a knight — whose revenues fund its hospitaller work. Eight “langues” articulated into priories, bailiwicks and commanderies.

Today
